”Consumer Education” concept for primary and secondary school

The ”Consumer Education” concept for primary and secondary school is prepared within the framework of the joint EU-UNDP project “Consumer Society Citizen Networks” in collaboration with Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The school consumer education actuality lies in forming of necessary rational consumer thinking, backed by consumption laws and natural demand for qualitative and safe well-being, aspiration for personal and public lifestyle improvement.

The contents of educational course “Consumer knowledge” is a complex of integrated knowledge, which serve as a background for forming of certain notions, skills as per living and working in political, legal, economic and cultural European level.

The “Consumer knowledge” course is a separate integrated course, which is taught in 1-11(12) grades. This is a present-day and practically directed course which presumes implementation of interactive teaching forms in combination with modern educational technologies as well as usage of traditional forms and methods.

Course structure is quite flexile. It allows studying the course “Consumer knowledge” consequently in each grade, at the same time it gives an opportunity to begin the studies on the course from any grade chosen by form-master. Programme for each grade consists of introductory part, and the contents of the programme has specific peculiarities for each grade depending on age and knowledge acquired on basic ad special subjects taught previously and in this very grade.

In particular, the teaching programme “Consumer knowledge” for 1-4 grades consists of such courses as: 1 st grade – “Young consumer alphabet”, 2nd grade - “First steps of consumer”; 3 rd grade “Family's consumption”; 4 th grade – “Community's consumption”.

The accents in 5-9 th grades are made on forming the consumer's culture, strengthening the information distribution on this issue. The purpose is to develop cultural consumer's behavior of the pupils at the situation “buyer-seller” and the ability of economic and qualitative purchasing.

In 10-11 th (12) grades there are different programmes for specializations “Law” and “Economics” in senior secondary school.
